Tour of Flanders: Railway barrier excitement: All professional cyclists identified

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has identified all professional cyclists involved in the railway barrier incident on the Tour of Flanders. The authority also announced that a decision on further criminal prosecution would be made based on the investigation and further findings.

During the race, several drivers, including eventual winner Tadej Pogacar and Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, ignored a red warning light and crossed a railway crossing shortly before the barrier was lowered. According to media reports, Pogacar and Co. face having their driving license revoked for at least eight days and a fine. Pogacar said afterwards that the drivers had been braked too late by the race management.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the violation was unacceptable

The public prosecutor’s office has now announced that failing to stop at a red light at a level crossing is one of the most serious traffic violations and can have serious consequences. It seriously endangers the safety of both drivers and third parties. The public prosecutor emphasized that such violations were also unacceptable in a sporting context. She did not name any affected drivers in her statement.

According to the regulations of the world cycling association UCI, drivers must stop at level crossings when the warning light is red. In the worst case, there is a risk of disqualification. However, in this case this is unlikely as it would affect a large number of drivers.
