Tony the super fan, has been to every English football pitch at least once

One super tifoso dei Queens Park Rangers he made a primacy which will be difficult to match: in 52 years he has visited every stadium and pitch in English professional football and the amateur system (Non-league) which includes 996 clubs spread across 48 divisions, largely regional. On Easter Monday 62enne Tony Incenzo hattended the match between Fulwood Amateurs and Thornton Cleveleys, valid for the North West Counties First Division North, in the last pitch he missed. Now he can say he is state in all 2,689 fields and to have Attended 5,804 games: he basically watched live football for 363 days, an entire year, without even counting injury time.

“Overwhelming emotion”

“It’s an overwhelming emotion”, Incenzo told the BBC, “having succeeded on this splendid sunny day is a great relief”. To document his undertaking, Incenzo collected in a notebook the signatures and stamps placed by the managers of the clubs he visited, a bit like pilgrims do along the various Camino de Santiago. They range from professional team stadiums with thousands of spectators to amateur games played in municipal parks without stands and an audience of relatives and people walking their dogs. “I enjoy myself on these pitches in the same way I enjoy the matches of the most important series,” he said. “From delightful little villages in Devon to remote seaside resorts in the North East, I have been to places and met people that without football I would never have seen.”

A massive shout-out to the TV and Radio reporter Tony Incenzo who yesterday completed his lifetime ambition of visiting every Non-League ground in the National League system!

The path to the record

Incenzo has cultivated this passion since he was a boy: at 17, in 1981, he had already visited the 92 stadiums of professional football (even with ‘update’ visits when clubs change facilities, as was the case with Everton who moved from Goodison Park to the Hill Dickinson Stadium).
To his extensive list, this super fan has already added all 42 stadiums of the top four Scottish divisions and dozens of other venues around Europe and the world. The whole thing without having missed even a single home game since 1973 of his QPR, a London team that plays in the Championship, the English B series, his first love. The club gave him a place in his own box at the Loftus Road stadium but he still buys two season tickets which he donates to charity.

The whole meticulous organization revolved around the QPR

The trips sometimes lasted the whole weekend allowing him to attend up to five matches. Tony usually travels alone but in his study he has hung a map on which he marks all the trips made with his wife and their seven-year-old daughter (born a few hours before a QPR home match which he still managed to see). In 2023 he was also presented with a club loyalty award for attending all home matches for 50 years. It was his mother, he recalled in an interview, who took him to his first match, in 1971, a Chelsea-Manchester United in which George Best, his mother’s idol, was sent off in the first half. He was eight years old and too short to be able to see the field, but those smells and noises immediately bewitched him.
