Timo Hammarberg and Tim Berger have at the Elite16 tournament in Saquarema (Brazil) caused a sensation. The young Austrians competed against the Norwegian Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum in two sets with 21:16 and 21:18.
The success is all the more surprising given that the conditions were anything but ideal. Hammarberg was there the night before the game massive stomach problems to fight and had to stabilize first. Nevertheless, the duo were on the court the next day – and showed an impressive performance.
Against the favored Norwegians, who as Olympic champion 2021 and World champion of 2022 and dominant team of recent years, Hammarberg/Berger acted courageously from the start. With constant side-out play, effective block work and high intensity, they won both sets and celebrated their first win against the top duo.
With their success, the Austrians secured second place in Pool E and thus moved into the knockout phase. The group phase had previously been changeable: a narrow 1:2 opening defeat against the Swiss Krattiger/Dillier was followed by a confident 2:0 win against the Brazilians Adelmo/Mateus.
