Djokovic retires in Paris, Sinner becomes world number 1

Novak Djokovic has announced his withdrawal from the French Open, after a knee problem felt yesterday during the round of 16 match against Cerundolo, won in the fifth set. As a result of this decision and the mechanisms for calculating the points of the ATP ranking, from next Monday Jannik Sinner will become the new world number one, even if he were to emerge defeated from the ongoing match on the central court against Igor Dimitrov.

“What can I say, it’s everyone’s dream to become number 1. But at the same time, seeing that Djokovic has withdrawn is a disappointment for everyone. I wish him a speedy recovery.” Jannick Sinner said this at the end of the quarter-final match in Paris against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, won in three sets.

“I will try not to think about it too much, to play my best tennis – Sinner said again – thanks to my team, it would be impossible without them, and also without you”, he added referring to the crowd that cheered him. “It’s a special moment for me – he continued – I’m very happy to share it with you, all those who are watching at home especially from Italy. We’ll see what I can do on Friday”.
