“Family will remain family”: indicted, Matthias Pogba speaks for the first time

Mathias Pogba comes out of silence. Almost two years after threatening Paul Pogba, via a video on Instagram, his big brother answered questions from the investigation unit of the team. The channel will broadcast a documentary entitled “Paul Pogba, toxic liaisons” this Thursday.

Mathias Pogba was placed in pre-trial detention in September 2022 along with five other men, all suspected of extortion from the former Juventus midfielder, on the night of March 19 to 20, 2022. He was released on December 23 last while awaiting trial.

Paul Pogba notably recounted during his first hearing before investigators that he had been trapped by childhood friends and two hooded men. The individuals were allegedly armed with assault rifles and blamed him for not having helped them financially. A sum of 13 million euros was allegedly claimed from him.

“No one is mad at anyone anymore”

During the interview, Mathias Pogba set a condition: not to mention the case while a trial is looming, the investigation having been closed since the end of May, reports the team. The accused now lives in Belgium, in Merchtem, a town of 15,000 inhabitants located twenty kilometers from Brussels. “I have lived here since September, I started training as a personal trainer and I opened my small academy, I train young people in football. And I’m training too, I still have two or three years in my legs,” he explains.

Without going into the substance of the matter, he confided that his stay in prison was “the worst moment of my (his) life”, assuring that “everything collapsed” at that moment. However, he denies having any regrets. “I didn’t go to prison for videos. I prefer not to talk about it now,” he said.

On an emotional level, Mathias Pogba promises that “no one is angry with anyone anymore”. Before adding: “Family will always be family, whatever people think. I am sure of myself. It’s a challenge of life, but everything will be fine. »

In the documentary from the L’Equipe channel, the thesis according to which Mathias Pogba was manipulated is addressed. In January 2024, he told the investigating judge that he had been “everyone’s puppet”, believing he had been “moved from left to right”. Paul Pogba was suspended for four years after testing positive for an anabolic steroid last summer. Since then, the 2018 world champion has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the end of February.
