Very sad news for Ligue 1. Former midfielder for AS Nancy and the Girondins de Bordeaux, Landry Nguemo died Thursday near Yaoundé in Cameroon, in a road accident at the age of 38. His former national teammate Samuel Eto’o, now president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, confirmed this by sharing an Instagram post expressing his sadness.
An international 42 times (three goals), Nguemo played for five seasons in Nancy (2005-2011), interspersed with a loan to Celtic Glasgow in 2009-10. He then joined the Girondins de Bordeaux in 2011, where he spent three seasons and won the Coupe de France in 2013. The Cameroonian subsequently played for Saint-Étienne in 2015, before ending his career in Turkey then in Norway , in 2020. In total, he played 208 Ligue 1 matches for seven goals.
A recovering midfielder, recognized for his recovery slaughter, Nguemo notably left good memories in Lorraine and Gironde. The official Ligue 1 account as well as that of ASSE paid tribute to him on their social networks.
