Scheduled for the co-main fight of UFC 303 not next Saturday (29), Diego Lopes has been one of the names with the greatest growth among the Brazilians in the organization.
After debuting in the featherweight category with a defeat to Movsar Evloev, in May of last year, the 29-year-old from Manaus ended up surprising even Dana White.
Diego Lopes has won two straight fights in 2023, one by submission in the first round and the other by technical knockout, also in the first round – both in less than two minutes.
The two triumphs received a bonus of US$50,000 (R$278,000, at current prices) for being considered the best performance of the night.
The president of Ultimate liked what he saw so much that he chose Manauara for the preliminary card of the historic UFC 300, in April this year, with the main fight between Alex Poatan and Jamahal Hill.
And Dana didn’t regret it. Lopes faced Sodiq Yussuf and delivered another first round knockout in less than two minutes. The victory, this time, did not earn the night’s bonus, but it made Diego enter the featherweight rankings with 14th place.

For the co-main event of UFC 303, Diego Lopes will have the challenge of facing American Brian Ortega, who is currently ranked third in the featherweight division.
This will probably be the Brazilian’s biggest challenge since joining the Ultimate, especially given Ortega’s favoritism and the Las Vegas crowd in his favor.
Brian joined the organization in 2014 and has eight wins, one draw and three losses – which happened in his last five fights.

The American has already challenged for the belt twice and lost on both occasions; the first for Max Holloway, in 2018, and the second for Alexander Volkanovski, in 2021.
But despite Diego being new to the organization, there is no reason for his confidence to be shaken. The Brazilian began his MMA career in 2012 and has 24 wins and only six losses on his record.
While Lopes has won three consecutive victories, by submission and knockout, Ortega has won two defeats and one in his last three clashes.
