Klein and Bremm German champions over 5000 meters

Hannah Klein and Florian Bremm have secured their first titles at the German Athletics Championships in Braunschweig. In the absence of German record holder Konstanze Klosterhalfen, Klein won the 5000 meter race in 15:11.83 minutes.

The athlete from Tübingen won ahead of her club colleague Eva Dieterich (15:30.28) and Svenja Pingpank from Hanover (16:05.03). In the men’s race, the runner from LSC Höchstadt/Aisch successfully defended his title from last year in 13:38.43 minutes. Bremm won ahead of the Wattenscheid 10,000-meter specialist Nils Voigt (13:41.21) and Davor Aaron Bienenfeld from Hanau (13:41.89).

Olympia without Klosterhalfen

The German record holder Klosterhalfen had cancelled the title fights, which also serve as Olympic qualification, due to the consequences of an infection. The 27-year-old, who became European champion over 5,000 metres in 2022, will also miss the Olympic Games in Paris. Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo also had to cancel for Braunschweig. She is preparing for the Olympic Games after a corona infection.

Klein can look forward to the Olympics

Klein won the overture to the national championships, in which title honours and Olympic tickets are at stake on Saturday and Sunday in the Eintracht Stadium, without any problems and with a huge lead. The sixth-place finisher at the European Championships has not yet run the direct standard for the Olympic Games this year. However, she is in a promising position in the world rankings. The 2023 Istanbul European Indoor Champion over 3,000 metres has worked hard to recover after tearing her Achilles tendon last year.

In the men’s race, the German-American Parsons, who had a lot of bad luck with his health last year, set the pace and was clearly in the lead. But the 30-year-old then had to let Bremm and other runners pass him. The German best of the year, Maximilian Thorwirth, dropped out early.
