Girmay wins for the second time

Biniam Girmay from Eritrea won the 8th stage of the Tour de France. The African beat sprint ace Jasper Philipsen on the uphill finish straight.

After the slightly undulating 183.4 km between Semur-en-Auxois and Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, Biniam Girmay, wearing the green sprint jersey, surprisingly won this year’s Tour for the second time. The 24-year-old had more strength in his legs at the end than the Belgian Jasper Philipsen and his compatriot Arnaud de Lie.

Tadej Pogacar remains in yellow. The Slovenian was not attacked. Remo Evenepoel is 33 seconds behind, Jonas Vingegaard is in third place with a gap of 1:15 minutes.

The route on Sunday will lead around Troyes over gravel roads and country lanes. The organizers have therefore included a gravel stage. The riders in the race for the overall ranking could suffer significant time losses due to falls or defects. In total, there are 14 gravel sections over a length of 32 km.
