Tom Aspinall retains interim title and challenges Jon Jones

Tom Aspinall retained the interim heavyweight title by knocking out Curtis Blaydes in the co-main event of UFC 304, in Manchester, on Saturday night (27). At home, the British fighter took the opportunity to challenge Jon Jones’ belt to become the definitive champion of the division.

Wasting no time, Aspinall went after Blaydes, pressing him against the fence. The American fought back, but ended up being knocked out after exactly one minute of fighting.

Curtis didn’t like the interruption from the Octagon referee, but in fact, he didn’t respond after being taken down by Tom.

In total, Blaydes managed to land just five significant blows, without any kicks, while Aspinall landed 14, in addition to the knockout.

With the result, the British fighter keeps the interim heavyweight belt; the real owner of the title is Jon Jones, who is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Aspinall calls for fight with Jon Jones

Temporary title holder due to Bones’ injury, Tom Aspinall wants to become the ultimate heavyweight champion.

After the knockout in just one minute, the British fighter took the opportunity to challenge the American for the belt.

“Jon Jones, I have nothing against you personally, but I think I’m better than you and I know I can beat you. So, I’m coming,” he warned.

Tom became the interim heavyweight champion after defeating Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295 in November last year. The fight replaced the Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic bout due to the champion’s injury.

The fight between Aspinall and Jones will likely be the next title fight in the division, but Jon still has no plans to return to the UFC.
