Mbappé, Sorloth and Lewandowski want Dovbyk’s vacant throne as ‘top scorer’

Kylian Mbappé, Alexander Sorloth and Lewandowski are aiming to be the top scorers in LaLiga EA Sports 2024-2025 and replace Artem Dovbyk, last season’s ‘Pichichi’ who left for the Italian Serie A, in a fight in which Gorka Guruzeta, Gerard Moreno, Iago Aspas and Borja Mayoral are the main national contenders.

Mbappé is making his debut in LaLiga EA Sports this season and will have a personal aspiration of being the competition’s top scorer. The French star is set to be Real Madrid’s offensive reference and, together with Vinícius and Jude Bellingham, form a fearsome attack for all of Europe. In addition, in the last league season with Paris Saint-Germain he managed to score 27 goals, a figure that would have been enough to win the ‘Pichichi’ trophy in Spain.

A goal-scoring instinct that is beyond question, since only counting the domestic competition, the Frenchman has managed to exceed the figure of 25 goals in seven of the last eight seasons, scoring more than 30 goals in two of them. Thus, the adaptation of his game to Spanish football will be his main handicap with respect to rivals who already know the Spanish league.

One of his biggest rivals in the fight for the ‘Pichichi’ is last season’s runner-up, Alexander Sorloth. The Norwegian managed to score 23 times wearing the Villarreal shirt. This year, the ‘Viking’ will be part of a squad with greater aspirations, and one that, a priori, will have more offensive opportunities, such as that of Atlético de Madrid.

The main question for the Norwegian striker is whether his ease in scoring last season was the result of a one-off inspiration, or whether he has definitely broken into the goalscorer he aspired to be. In only two of the last five seasons has he managed to score more than 20 goals, with the 24 he scored with Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super League in the 2019-20 season being his best record.

The other piece of the trident is an old goal-scoring ‘rocker’: Robert Lewandowski. The Pole, top scorer of the 2022-2023 season, will face his third campaign at FC Barcelona, and will continue to be the scoring figure of one of the main contenders for the La Liga title. His numbers were reduced last season, in which he did not even manage to reach 20 goals, something that had not happened to him in league competition since 14-15.

However, the Pole’s quality is beyond doubt, and with a team that aims to be very attacking, and under the orders of Hansi Flick, the coach with whom he won the treble at Bayern, he hopes to recover his best form. If he succeeds, Lewandowski should be in the running, along with Mbappé and Sorloth, to win what would be his second ‘Pichichi’ trophy.

MAYORAL, MORENO, ASPAS AND GURUZETA, THE NATIONAL STRIKES

At a time when the national goalscorer’s value is on the decline, and with the departure of Álvaro Morata, Spain’s top scorer last season, to the Italian Serie A, Borja Mayoral, Gerard Moreno, Iago Aspas and Gorka Guruzeta are the Spanish forwards called to achieve the highest goal-scoring figures in LaLiga EA Sports 2024-25.

The Getafe striker equalled Morata’s 15 goals in the race for the ‘Zarra’ trophy last season, which ended prematurely due to a serious knee injury that prevented him from increasing his scoring tally. The Madrid striker had his best scoring season in the domestic competition, and this year he wants to, at the very least, return to those figures.

This is also the case for Guruzeta. The Athletic Club striker has established himself as the main offensive figure for Ernesto Valverde’s team. In total, the Lezama youth player scored 14 goals, his highest since becoming a professional. Despite this, the maturity of his second full season at Athletic should allow him to achieve an even better record.

Finally, two goal-scoring veterans, Iago Aspas and Gerard Moreno, want to be contenders after a grey last year. The Celta striker, winner of the ‘Zarra’ trophy on four occasions, hopes to return to scoring figures above 15 goals, something he has not achieved in the last two seasons.

Villarreal’s top scorer, the national ‘top scorer’ for two years, will try to leave his injury problems behind and be among the top scorers after the last three seasons where he has scored a total of 26 goals, just three more than the 23 in 20-21.
