Leverkusen boss: Carro apologizes for attacks – Bayern “extremely irritated”

Munich’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen reacted with incomprehension to the unusually harsh criticism of Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl by Bayer boss Fernando Carro. “We were extremely irritated by Fernando Carro’s personal attack on Max Eberl,” said Dreesen in a statement from the record champions.

“I also told Fernando Carro this in a personal conversation, because we can never and will never tolerate, let alone accept, such irrelevant attacks on FC Bayern.” In the transfer poker for Bayer Leverkusen’s national player Jonathan Tah, Carro had apologized after his comments.

In the SZ Talk in Munich’s Gasteig, Max Eberl talks about the months-long search for a coach, FC Bayern’s external image, his vision for the club’s future – and he hints at criticism of national coach Julian Nagelsmann.

“I am an emotional person. I made the statements about Max Eberl in an informal exchange with Bayer 04 fans. It was not my intention that they should be taken up and multiplied in this form. But that does not change the statement, for which I hereby apologize,” Carro told the Bild. Previously, the Kicker reported that Carro said about Bayern sporting director Eberl at a fan meeting in the BayArena on Tuesday evening: “Well, I don’t think much of Max Eberl, absolutely nothing. And I wouldn’t negotiate with him.”

“He admitted that he made a mistake here with his public apology,” added Dreesen. “Despite all the sporting competition, we should still be guided by mutual respect.” Tah is the reason for the criticism of FC Bayern. The background is the stalemate surrounding Tah that has been going on for weeks.

The 28-year-old central defender, whose contract with the double winners expires in the summer of 2025, is still training in Leverkusen. The clubs are said to have long since reached agreement on the terms and conditions and the transfer fee of 25 million euros plus bonuses. The only condition: Bayern Munich must sell players beforehand.

The sales of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Manchester United for a total of around 60 million euros are now official, but the record champions are not expected to press ahead with the Tah signing any further. This is a difficult situation for Bayer. Carro had already told the club a few days ago that Bild said: “In addition to the modalities of a change, we also have to keep an eye on the time. There is not much of that left, because we also still have to be able to react.”
