Zverev loses thrilling semi-final against Sinner

Tennis pro Alexander Zverev narrowly missed out on reaching the final at the tournament in Cincinnati. The 27-year-old from Hamburg lost after a tough fight in the semifinals against world number one Jannik Sinner 6:7 (9:11), 7:5, 6:7 (4:7). After 3 hours and 7 minutes, Germany’s number one had to admit defeat to the 23-year-old Italian. Zverev had previously won the last four games against Sinner.

“Sometimes you have to play with your gut feeling a bit. And I think that was my strength today,” said Sinner after the match, in which he again suffered from slight hip problems. “There were some ups and downs that can happen, especially when you play for more than three hours. It was a good match, I think, for both of us. He served very, very well, so I can be very proud.”

Zverev reached the semifinals of Cincinnati for the third time in a row. In 2021, the Tokyo Olympic champion won the title at the Masters tournament in the US state of Ohio. The event serves as preparation for the US Open. The last Grand Slam tournament of the season in New York begins on August 26.
