Middle finger gesture? DFB investigates Leverkusen’s Boniface

The German Football Association (DFB)’s control committee is now investigating Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface because he is said to have shown the Stuttgart players the middle finger as he walked past them after the Supercup. The DFB announced this. The German champions won the match against VfB Stuttgart 4:3 on penalties on Saturday evening.

According to the DFB, referee Tobias Stieler stated when asked that he had not seen this scene, which is why the control committee can investigate retrospectively. “The committee has now written to the striker and asked him to make a statement as soon as possible,” it said. Once the statement has been received and evaluated, the control committee will decide on the further course of the proceedings.

After the final whistle, Bayer coach Xabi Alonso reacted calmly to the question of how he assessed an allegedly unsportsmanlike gesture by his attacker. “I didn’t see it and can’t comment on it. But there was this controversy in the last few minutes. That’s normal and not a big issue,” the 42-year-old Spaniard explained.
