Bundesliga: Union Berlin beats St. Pauli 1-0 and is top of the table

Amidst the turmoil surrounding the last-minute departure of national player Robin Gosens, Union Berlin celebrated its first win of the season in the Bundesliga. Coach Bo Svensson’s team won the opening home game against newly promoted FC St. Pauli on Friday evening in an unspectacular 1-0 (1-0) victory and jumped to the top of the table, at least for one night.

It had previously been announced that Gosens would be moving to AC Florence shortly before the transfer deadline and after only one year in Berlin. Benedict Hollerbach (34th) shot Union to its first win of the young season, after only managing a 1:1 draw with Svensson’s former club FSV Mainz 05 on the first matchday.

For St. Pauli, however, the false start was perfect. After the 0:2 defeat against 1. FC Heidenheim, the Kiezkickers suffered their second defeat in two games. Before kick-off, the topic of Gosens was wafting through the Alte Försterei. When the line-up was published around an hour before the game, the 30-year-old was missing from the squad. A few hours earlier, Sky had already reported on an impending move to Fiorentina, which Union’s sports director Horst Heldt ultimately confirmed before the game.

In the 2nd league, Fortuna Düsseldorf had taken the lead with a 1-0 (0-0) home win against Hannover 96, Danny Schmidt scored the goal of the evening in the 59th minute. In the Bavarian duel, Greuther Fürth won 4-0 (1-0) at Jahn Regensburg. Meyerhöfer (4th), Futkeu (49th), Hrgota (77th) and Green (88th) scored for the Franconians.
