Paralympics: Caironi wins gold in the 100 meters, Sabatini falls and overwhelms Contrafatto, who still wins bronze

Martina Caironi is the gold medalist in the women’s 100m T63 at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The Italian reclaims the title she had already won in Rio 2016, running the category’s premier race at the Stade de France in 14.16 (season best) and taking home a historic medal, Italy’s 70th, which thus surpasses the haul from Tokyo 2020, the 24th gold. However, the Italians were unable to repeat the historic Japanese podium: Ambra Sabatini, the reigning Paralympic champion, and Monica Contrafatto were very unlucky, with the former tripping in the final stretch of the throw, falling to the ground and knocking over her teammate. The silver medal went to Indonesian Karisma Evi Tiarani (14.26, world record T42), the bronze to British Ndidikama Okoh (14.59).

Counterfeit bronze despite the fall

Despite the fall in the final caused by Ambra Sabatini, the Italian was considered third and therefore bronze medal in the women’s 100m T63, tied with the British Ndidikama Okoh. For Italy it is therefore the 71st medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics
