Candela P-12, the electric ferry with hydrofoils that flies over the sea

He electric ferry Candela P-12 has begun operating in Berlin, drastically reducing travel times on urban routes thanks to its innovative hydrofoil design, which allows it to “fly” over water. This boat, with capacity for 30 passengers, completes a 6.6-kilometre journey in just 10 minutes, transforming river transport in the German capital.

With a top speed of 55 km/h, the Candela P-12 has become the fastest ferry in its class. Equipped with a hydrofoil system that lifts it out of the water, this ferry not only improves travel times but also offers smooth and efficient navigation, even in adverse weather conditions. This electric ferry is the first of its kind in Germany and is designed to operate in public or private transport services.

The technology behind the Candela P-12 stands out for its energy efficiency. By rising above the water, the ferry reduces friction, allowing for fully electric operation without sacrificing speed or range. This innovation also results in a significant reduction in operating costs, as the ferry consumes up to 90% less energy compared to traditional fossil-fuelled ferries.

The ferry is powered by two 180 kWh batteries that allow for up to three hours of continuous operation. In addition, its electric motor, the Candela C-POD, has a lifespan of 3,000 hours and requires minimal maintenance, an advantage over conventional vessels. The P-12’s structure is made of carbon fiber, ensuring its strength and durability.

The Candela P-12 not only offers efficiency, but also sustainability. Being completely electric, it reduces polluting emissions and noise, contributing to cleaner and quieter transport. The Swedish startup that developed the ferry hopes that this type of vessel will mark the future of river transport in congested cities such as Berlin, where mobility is limited by land traffic.
