The book “Algorithms, Security and Ethics of Innovation” presented at Rome Future Week

During the Rome Future Week, the week dedicated to innovation and the future, which took place from 16 to 22 September, the book was presented at the independent bookshop Blue Room “Algorithms, Security and Ethics of Innovation – The Person at the Center of the Digital Transition”written by Alessandro Wins e Fabio Pompei published by Tab Edizioni. The volume, prefaced by Agcom Commissioner Massimiliano Capitanio, had as protagonists its two authors, both with a past as local administrators in the Capital.

During the presentation, the two authors underlined the importance of this project for reaffirm Rome as a national hub for innovation with the aim of placing the city at the centre of the country’s digital transition process.

The strategic nature of European policies in the context of innovation

The debut event of the text, held last year at the headquarters of the Italian Office of the European Parliament, enjoyed the High Patronage of the EU Parliament itself. The official debut was enriched by the patronage of other prestigious institutions, including the Order of Journalists of Lazio, the eCampus University, and the Italian Confederation of the Union of Intellectual Professions – Unionquadri, an organization present both at the CNEL and at the EESC in Brussels.

The text addresses important and current issues related to the impact of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence in contemporary society. The benefits deriving from the use of AI algorithms are undeniable, but the authors also highlight the associated risks, such as the loss of control of personal data and the growing exposure of citizens to artificial solicitations.

Delicate issues such as data theft in public administrations and the ambiguous role of AI in fomenting inequalities and reproducing the prejudices of those who create software are addressed. The authors, however, suggest how, through conscious management of algorithms, it is possible to exploit their potential in an ethical and responsible way, always putting the human being at the center.

The authors

Alessandro Alongi, professor at Mercatorum University and specialized in parliamentary law, is a journalist active on issues of innovation and privacy, while Fabio Pompei, computer engineer and journalist, has a long academic and business career in the telecommunications sector.

Both authors of numerous essays, including “Digital Conversion” (2016), “The Value of Data in the Digital Ecosystem” (2019), “Fakedemocracy” (2020), “Privacy Law” (2021), they are reference figures in the panorama of Italian technological innovation.

With this new text, Alongi and Pompei aim to raise awareness among readers about the risks and opportunities of the digital transition, offering a guide to live the digital environment in a conscious way in the world of algorithms and artificial intelligence.
