No cellular reception? Apple satellite service started

Visiting the USA and Canada and there is no cellular reception? Apple has started to activate the new service that allows emergency messages and regular messages to be sent via satellite, even when there is no cellular network coverage.

The new service, available to users of iPhone 14 and above, allows text messages (SMS) and iMessages to be sent through a satellite connection, without the need for an emergency or additional payment.

How does it work? When the device detects that it is out of range of cellular or Wi-Fi networks, an alert appears offering quick access to satellite-enabled services, including messaging, emergency SOS, roadside assistance, and Find My location. The service can also be accessed directly from the Messages app, with the device providing instructions on how to point the iPhone to an available satellite for transmission.

iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted, while SMS messages are more restricted to prevent abuse of the system. Close contacts and relatives can start an SMS message at any time, but with other contacts, the sender must send the first message to allow a response.

For those who want to try the service, Apple has included a demo mode in the iOS 18 Settings app, where you can learn how to establish a satellite connection and send messages if necessary.

At this point, the service is only available in the US and Canada, but Apple plans to expand the service to other countries in the near future, depending on technological deployment and regulatory approvals. Israel is not currently targeted for the new service.
