Prada and Axiom presented a new spacesuit

Italian fashion house Prada and the American company Axiom Space presented a spacesuit they designed together on Wednesday in Milan.

Nasa has ordered a suit for a trip to the moon in 2026. With the Artemis 3 flight, a person is supposed to step into the lunar chamber for the first time since 1972.

The white outfit is decorated with Prada’s trademark red stripes and gray color on the knees and elbows.

Otherwise the suit looks roughly the same as the previous ones. So from Teletap’s snow suit more than from luxury fashion.

Of course, the main goal of the suit is not a stylish appearance, but the astronauts’ ability to function.

The Artemis flight will land near the Moon’s south pole, where the sun shines only slightly above the horizon. The temperature in the sun rises to over 50 degrees. On the other hand, it can be -200 degrees below zero in craters that remain forever in the shadow.

The craters are going to be searched for water, so the suit is designed to keep the astronaut warm for two hours.

In the heat, the suit cools down, and the white material reflects away heat radiation.

In addition, the astronaut needs protection from space radiation, pressure and the moon dust that penetrates everywhere.

Matt Ondler At the Milan Space Congress, Axiom Space described the suit as an extreme piece of engineering.

Communication connections, breathing air intake and carbon dioxide removal from the helmet must also be adapted to it.

The most demanding parts include the footwear. They must enable an eight-hour moonwalk in harsh conditions.

According to the designers, Prada’s sewing techniques have increased the comfort of the suit. Prada assured that one size fits all body types, men and women.

The gloves are made to measure.

Wired magazine according to Prada’s marketing director Lorenzo Bertelli predicted at the congress that space tourism would open up a wider market for suits.

“Now only a few get into space, but in a few years the prices will drop. Everyone can give themselves an adventure.”
