Animal of the week|Blue sea urchin is a joy to the eye, but it stings.
Toxic A “dragon” stalks tourists in the Canary Islands, Ilta-Sanomat reported last week. The interesting title made me wonder what the hell it was all about.
The dangerous stalker turned out to be a player in pelagic surface waters, a favorite of marine animal enthusiasts, a poisonous sea snail. Or snails don’t have sex, if they were a person, they would be just a person, even a hermaphrodite.
to the simians i.e. scientific Latin Glaucus atlanticus is one of the most beautiful creatures in the world, downright dangerously seductive.
Deep blue and innocent white colors merge in its winged essence. The creature looks unreal, why not a bit like a dragon with its winged protrusions.
It is still a very common animal living on the bottom of the oceans. Sometimes they drift into coastal waters, which is why it is appropriate to warn tourists, because the creature is extremely poisonous. Not necessarily fatal for a healthy person, but really painful.
The bluefish is typically only the size of a thumb, a ferocious predator. It makes a profession of devouring beasts much larger than itself, especially Portuguese warships.
These poisonous, jellyfish-like creatures can have tentacles up to 30 meters long. This little three-centimeter-tall snail freezes them until the warship is sunk. The scale is roughly the same as if a squirrel were to scare an elephant away.
This is also where the poison of the sea snail comes from: the creature condenses into itself the poison of the fire cells, which stings like hell if the snail hits the skin of a swimmer, for example.
Otus the circle of life is wide, but thin. It is found all over the world, but it only lives in the very surface water of the sea, like some bacteria in the thin skin of an apple. It floats on its back, carried by the ocean currents.
The belly side of the sea snail visible upwards is therefore blue. This way it merges with the blue of the sea splashing below. Seen below the surface, the creature blends into the sky, as its back is white-grey.
We don’t know if it would rather swim on its belly, but nature turned things around this way.
