They hack a scientific calculator to install ChatGPT: the most sophisticated plagiarism for exams

In an unexpected turn, a hacker has managed to install ChatGPTthe popular OpenAI chatbot, on a TI-84 Plus programmable calculator, using a Wi-Fi module. This advance allows access to the powerful artificial intelligence model without the need for a cell phone or computer, opening up the possibility of using it in classrooms, even in situations where its use is prohibited.

The hacker, known as ChromaLock assures that its intention is to demonstrate the educational capabilities of the calculator, and not to promote academic dishonesty. However, anyone with advanced computer skills could replicate the process and take advantage of the technology in situations such as exams.

As explained in TechSpot, to achieve this feat, ChromaLock used a ESP32 C3 microcontroller which connected to the model TI-32 and emulated a TI-84 Plus. Then, he linked both devices to a Wi-Fi network, allowing the calculator to access ChatGPT through its text interface.

Despite the limitations of the device, the mod offers the possibility of performing mathematical operations and even chatting with the chatbot, as long as a secondary device to complement the experience.

Although using ChatGPT on a calculator does not have the same versatility as its desktop or mobile version, this hack shows that it is possible to integrate advanced technologies into devices as simple as a calculator. However, the process requires a high level of programming knowledge and access to additional components.

The hacker has posted the instructions and additional uses on his GitHub page, where he details how to replicate this mod and access ChatGPT from a calculator.
