23 years ago, Steve Jobs took the first Apple iPod out of his pocket and changed the world of music

 

After celebrating its 20th birthday in 2021, iPod said goodbye to its fans a year later, when Apple announced the end of production of its legendary device in May. On this day in 2001. Steve Jobs he went on stage and took out a device from his pocket that would revolutionize the way we listened to music until then.

The original iPod from 2001 could store 1,000 songs in it, completely digital, thanks to the partnership between Apple and Toshiba, which took care of the then unimaginable five gigabytes of hard disk space.

Reduced piracy and brought music within reach

The first iPod was the size of a deck of cards, and was recognizable by its physical scroll wheel. The five gigabyte model cost $399, and the ability to store music at your fingertips was complemented by the arrival of the iTunes digital music store in 2003, which reduced piracy for a while.

Namely, you didn’t have to buy the whole album on iTunes, butć you could have each song individually for 99 cents, which eventually led to Apple holding 70 percent of the legal digital song market in 2007.
