Erotic wall paintings were found in an apartment in the ruined city of Pompeii

The latest discovery reinforces Pompeii’s reputation as a city where erotic art was valued.

Archaeologists have found an apartment in the ruins of the Italian city of Pompeii with erotic frescoes on the walls. The news agency reported on the discovery, among others Reuters and a British magazine The Guardian.

One of the murals depicts a satyr and a nymph embracing on a bed, and another depicts a couple who may be Venus and Adonis.

Another wall painting features Phaidra and her stepson Hippolytos. According to ancient myth, Phaidra accused Hippolytus of rape after Hippolytus rejected her.

The apartment is called “Faidra’s house”. It is small, but despite its size, its frescoes are impressive, says the Pompeii Archaeological Site in its announcement.

According to archaeologists, Phaidra and Hippolytos appear in the frescoes, among others.

Pompeii is known, in addition to the fatal volcanic eruption, for its erotic art. For example in 2023 in the city, the house of the Vettius was reopened to visitors, the walls of which are covered with numerous erotic frescoes.

Pompeii, located near the present-day city of Naples, was home to an estimated 13,000 inhabitants when it fell under the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The area is one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions.

The partially excavated city regularly makes archaeological discoveries that shed light on the lives of the people of the Roman city.
