Three decades later, the first website is still active and available to visit

The first website in history, created by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, is still online despite the fact that more than three decades have passed since its launch in the CERN laboratories in Geneva. Its initial function was very different from that of today’s websites.

According to the Genbeta portal, Berners-Lee designed this first website to facilitate access to documents and the link system that connects information at a global level. Although its design was very simple – without colors, images or advertising – it laid the foundations of web architecture by allowing users to navigate between documents using links, or ‘hypertext’.

In its early days, this project ran on Berners-Lee’s personal computer, a NeXT machine, which had a very clear warning plastered on it: “This machine is a server. DO NOT SWITCH OFF.”

The original page, on its monochrome background, included instructions for navigating the nascent network and even taught how to create your own servers. Its headline, “World Wide Web,” explained the website’s mission: offer “universal access to a large universe of documents.” And although it was created in 1990, it was not until 1993 that CERN made it public.

This historic site is not only a technical milestone; It is also part of our cultural history. In 2022, Fundación Telefónica launched a global campaign under the name #ElSitio1155 to petition UNESCO that recognized the first website as a World Heritage Site taking into account the importance of the project for the further development of the Internet, communication and modern information.
