The Netherlands will start to control documents at its borders and thus become a member state of the European Union, that is, the ninth member of the Schengen area that applies control of its borders, reports Anadolu.
The control of the crossing of its borders in the EU moreć applied by Austria, Germany, Denmark, France, Sweden, Slovenia and Italy. Apart from them, Norway, which is a Schengen member, temporarily returned control of its borders.
They cite a high level of irregular migration, smuggling of migrants and significantly increased secondary migration flows as the reason. They also state that there is a large and cumulative pressure on the migration system, especially for the reception of asylum seekers, as well as an increase in criminal incidents in the reception centers.
According to the Schengen rules, the re-introduction of border control cannot last longer than six months continuously, so the EU and Schengen member states make decisions about the extension every six months, writes FenixMagazin. Most of the EU, i.e. Schengen, which have returned controls at their borders, have done so by the first half of 2025.
