Peruvian scientist is highlighted in the BBC Top 100 2024: “I am the only one, but I know that many more will follow soon” | Rosa Vásquez Espinoza

Rosa Vásquez Espinoza has just been recognized in the BBC 100 Women 2024 list (BBC 100Women), being also the only Peruvian woman who is part of this list that highlights work in culture, education, sports, sciencehealth or technology.

The international chain highlights Vásquez Espinoza as having dedicated his career to combining cutting-edge science and traditional knowledge to protect biodiversity in the Peruvian Amazon. And part of his work is inspired by the wisdom of his healer grandmother.

She has founded Amazon Research International, alongside communities to explore the untapped biodiversity of the rainforest. This has allowed him to discover new bacteria in the legendary Boiling River of the Amazon.

He has also worked on the first chemical analysis of stingless bees and medicinal honey in Peru. He has also dedicated his efforts to the MicroAmazon virtual interactive map, which aims to explore the country’s microbiological biodiversity.

The researcher reacted on her Instagram account, calling this moment “surreal and overwhelming,” although in a beautiful way. He indicated that his work has always prioritized nature and local communities.

“Having my work recognized today in the “BBC 100 Women 2024” list is something I could never have dreamed of. I am the only Peruvian on this year’s list, but I know many more will follow soon, including indigenous leaders and scientists we work tirelessly to elevate and support at @amazonresearchint.wrote.

Her voice as a scientist has become stronger and she warns about the consequences of climate change, not only in our country.

“Climate change is accelerating worryingly around the world with terrifying impacts including fires, unbearable temperatures, floods and more,” he told the Andina news agency.

On the other hand, as an explorer she has worked with National Geographic, and even received a scholarship from this organization. “Science is constantly opening new fields of innovation that include an entire universe of molecules and microorganisms that we can use to help replace less sustainable materials and practices as chemical biologists,” said the researcher.

Following this recognition, her work can now be a source of inspiration for more women who continue to make their way in science.
