Support for Sony PSVR2 controllers is coming

According to rumors reported by Mark Gurman in Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter, Apple Vision Pro could soon support Sony PlayStation VR2 controllers. It seems that Apple and Sony had planned to announce compatibility “weeks ago”, but the launch has been postponed. The partnership, if confirmed, would involve the sale of Sony controllers by Apple, which are currently not available individually. Sony has been working on the integration for months, while Apple has consulted third-party developers to evaluate their interest in using Sony controllers for Vision Pro.

This is potentially positive news for Vision Pro owners who want a more complete gaming experience. Currently, the selection of native games for visionOS is limited, despite some interesting titles like “Thrasher”. Gurman points out that Apple intends to use Sony controllers not only for gaming, but also for navigation in visionOS and for more precise control in applications like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Currently, you can use a standard Bluetooth controller to navigate visionOS and play games compatible with iPad and iPhone controllers, iOS emulators, and native Virtual Boy games.

It remains to be seen whether this partnership will materialize and contribute to the spread of quality games on the platform. The sales of Vision Pro and Apple’s historical difficulty in obtaining the support of video game developers raise doubts about the success of the initiative. However, Vision Pro differs from other Apple devices and virtual reality is a market in itself. The community’s interest in dedicated controllers is evident, as demonstrated by the success of Kickstarter projects such as “Surreal Touch”, which aims to develop Meta Quest 3-style controllers for the Vision Pro.
