Amazon Web Services (AWS) annually organizes an international event in which it shows what’s new for the following year. At this AWS re:Invent 2024 -which takes place in Las Vegas (USA)-, the Amazon company dedicated to Cloud Computing surprised with several announcements, with which it seeks to make clear its leadership not only in services in the cloud, but also in issues of artificial intelligence.
During the first day of this event, there was one announcement that stood out among the others. The launch of Amazon Newa family of artificial intelligence models, with different versions, functionalities and performances that promise to adapt to the needs of each user. This announcement was made by Matt Garman, in his first conference as CEO of Amazon.
Amazon’s ChatGPT?
With a name that evokes novelty, it was presented Amazon Nova. This is a range of foundational models. And what are these? They are deep learning neural networks that, instead of creating artificial intelligence from scratch, use these models as a starting point to “develop machine learning models that drive new applications quickly and cost-effectively”as defined by the same company. Basically, they are able to understand language, generate text and images and converse in natural language.
Amazon Nova is an entire family of these foundational models that have been developed for multimodal tasks (text, image and video), but with industry-leading price-efficiency performance.
The family includes other models:
- Nova Microa text-only model that is focused on speed and low cost offering low latency;
- Nova Litewhich also offers speed to process images, videos and texts, also at a low cost;
- Nova Prowhich combines precision, speed and cost for a wide range of tasks;
- Nova Premierintended for complex reasoning tasks. All are optimized to work in 15 languages.
Is comparing Nova to ChatGPT an exaggeration? The same company ensures that its performance is equal or better in 85% of the metrics when compared to tools like ChatGPT -4.

But, in addition, AWS has other models such as New Canvas y Nova Reelwhich are aimed at creating professional quality images and videos. These models offer multilingual support and are optimized for business applications.
Nova models are already integrated into Amazon Bedrock, a platform where they find different foundational models for use in a unified manner.
Apple’s support
During the event’s ‘keynote’, a guest that no one expected appeared: Apple. It was Benoit Dupin, senior director of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at Apple, who took the stage at the convention center of the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas to support AWS in its competition against Microsoft and Google in the Cloud Computing market.
Dupin – who had previously worked at Amazon – explained how the apple company uses different AWS services and the key role that this company has within Apple Intelligence.
Given that many other launches were also made in this ReInvent 2024 – especially new processors and specialized software to improve performance, efficiency and energy consumption in artificial intelligence projects, Dupin mentioned on behalf of Apple how they are already using many of these news in the different processes they follow for the development of their artificial intelligence proposal.
