Expert on Facebook crash: ‘Probably they were releasing new code so it disrupted the system’

Facebook, Messenger and Instagram ‘fell’ on Wednesday afternoon, and WhatsApp is also having problems, millions of users all over the world during the evening had problems with access and posts on the network, including Croatian users. Many have been logged out of their accounts and cannot log in again, and those who are older logged in practitioners cannot do anything on that social network.

Marko Rakar, a political consultant and advisor in the field of IT systems and the use of financial forensics in identifying abuses, corruption and crime in 24 hours, said that he could not say with certainty what caused the difficulties. , but it is very likely a ‘release of new code that disrupted the system’s operation’.

– I noticed that some functions on Facebook work and some don’t. They have thousands and thousands of servers and these kinds of errors mostly happen when they release a new version of the code that disrupts the operation of the system, so the synchronization broke somewhere. Some vital parts of the communication of those servers are not working. They have to find the error, solve the error and resend the new code to all those servers, and since there are a lot of those servers, such refreshing of the code in the background takes hours because it cannot be sent simultaneously – explains Rakar.

– This is not the first time that such things have happened, and if we assume that the same error occurred on all three Meta platform networks mentioned, it means that some important part, part of the background infrastructure, was affected. They probably noticed the error in the code right away and fixed it, but as I alreadyć said, there are a lot of servers, so the recovery takes longer – said Rakar and added that the longer the network works, the longer it takes. tonight or Thursday morning at the latest. Also, after such difficulties, companies make an analysis and publish what caused the difficulties.
