The golden tongue helped the mummy to speak in the afterlife

Golden ones golden tongues made for the dead have been found in the tombs of ancient Egypt, in the cemetery of the city of Oksyrhynchos.

Oxyrhynchos was a city in ancient Egypti, which was located west of the Nile.

Archaeologists found a grave in the cemetery containing 13 ancient mummies. They all had golden tongues and also golden claws in their graves.

Mummies was found at the bottom of a large grave. The excavations revealed a hall with three rooms. There were dozens of mummies in them.

The purpose of the golden tongue was to help the deceased when speaking to others in the afterlife.

Mummies are from from the Ptolemaic periodi.e. from around 304–30 BC. At that time, ancient Egypt was ruled by a dynasty that descended Alexander the Great of generals.

Archaeologists had already found 16 golden tongues from the dead in Oksyrhynchos.

Mummies believed that the language of the deceased could be lost, because gold was the “meat of the gods” in the afterlife.

Archaeologists reported on the discovery Esther Pons Mellado and Maite Mascort. They lead Spanish-Egyptian archaeological excavations in Oksyrhynchos, says website Live Science.

The group led by them also made new discoveries.

“A lot of golden tongues have been found in the area,” says the professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo Salima Ikram. He did not participate in the excavations.

The deceased may have belonged to the high elite of the region, says Ikram in Live Science. According to him, it is possible that golden tongues were the fashion of embalmers in the region.

Archaeologists also found 29 amulets in the grave. Among other things, they described the gods of the Egyptians.
