Almost every new car Norwegians bought in 2024 was fully electric

Nine out of ten new cars sold in Norway last year were fully electric, registration data showed on Thursday, as the country met its goal of adding only electric cars to the road by 2025.

Fully electric vehicles will account for 88.9 percent of new car sales in 2024, according to data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).

“We only need 10 percent more to reach the goal for 2025,” OFV announced in a press release.

Of the 128,691 newly registered cars last year, 114,400 were electric, the highest share of any major car market and up from 82 percent in 2023.

Despiteč that it is a large producerđač oil and gas, Norway aims for all new cars sold to have “zero emissions” starting in 2025, which is 10 years ahead of the European Union’s target, although Norway is not a member.

In 2012, electric cars accounted for only 2.8 percent of sales, but since then they have exploded thanks to various incentives.

They were exempted from more taxes, which made them competitive with highly taxed internal combustion cars.

They were also exempted from paying tolls, had free parking in public parking lots and could use public transport lanes.

Although some tax breaks and incentives have been phased out over the years, electric cars have become commonplace.

Tesla is the leading company for the production of electric cars in Norway with 19 percent of the market, followed by Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo and BMW.
