The European Court fined the European Union for violating its own rules on data protection

On Wednesday, the European General Court ruled for the first time that the European Commission must pay compensation because it did not comply with its own data protection regulations.

The court determined that the Commission transferred the personal data of a German citizen to the United States of America without adequate security protection and ordered the main executive body of the Union to pay him 400 euros in compensation.

The German citizen used the option to register via the Facebook social network to register for the conference on the European Union’s website.

The court, which deals with cases against European institutions, found that the transfer of the user’s IP address to the American company Meta Platforms, owned by Facebook, violated European data protection rules.

The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and stringent data privacy laws in the world.

Large companies such as Klarna, Meta, LinkedIn and others have faced high fines from the European Union for non-compliance with GDPR rules.
