Trump reversed the measure that prohibited access to TikTok and gives it a second chance

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Sunday that when he takes office on Monday he will suspend the law that prohibits TikTok and proposed that the platform be controlled in a 50% by American shareholders. Elon Musk was ruled out.

A law passed by Congress in 2024 went into effect early Sunday morning, causing TikTok to stop working in the United States, affecting more than 170 million users.

However, the legislation includes a clause that allows a period of 90 days if the White House shows progress toward a viable deal, although ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, has so far rejected any sale.

“I would like the United States to have ownership of the 50% of a joint venture,” Trump declared on his Truth Social network. He indicated that the decree he will issue on Monday will extend the time for a ban. “That way we can reach an agreement,” he explained.

Trump noted that his “initial idea” is to create a “joint venture” between the current owners of TikTok and/or new owners, through which the United States would obtain 50% ownership of the joint company.

He estimated the platform’s value could scale to “hundreds of billions of dollars, maybe trillions.” The Republican discussed TikTok with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

After months of legal battle, the US Supreme Court finally unanimously endorsed legislation on Friday that bans the social network starting Sunday if its Chinese owners do not sell it.

The highest court established that the law does not violate the right to freedom of expression and that the US government has demonstrated that its security concerns due to Chinese ownership of the platform are legitimate.

“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers an important avenue to express themselves,” the judges considered.

TikTok disconnected access to its users in the United States late Saturday. “A law has been applied prohibiting TikTok in the United States. This means that you can no longer use TikTok at this time,” warns a message when trying to connect to the popular short video platform.

Businessman Frank McCourt is willing to invest $20 billion with other partners for the platform’s activities in the United States, without its powerful algorithm.

A TikTok spokesperson said this Sunday that they are in the process of restoring their service following the guarantees offered to their suppliers by the US president-elect, Donald Trump, who will take office on Monday.

“TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will not face sanctions in providing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans,” the platform said in a release.

According to him, they will work with the future president on a long-term solution that allows its operation in the United States. “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office,” the platform’s message adds. “Please stay tuned!”

TikTok’s decision came about an hour and a half before the law went into effect, scheduled for 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday.

According to Joe Biden’s Government, TikTok took this step on its own initiative, because after the Supreme Court ruling, the White House announced that the current Executive would not apply the regulations and that compliance would be in the hands of the new Administration.
