The average age of vehicles in the Republic of Croatia is 14.6 years, the same as in 2023.

Last year, there were 214,224 first vehicle registrations at technical inspection stations, which is 23,401, i.e. 12 percent more than the previous year, and the average age of the vehicle was 14.6 years, the same as the year before, the Center announced. for Croatian vehicles. Last year, 159,563 vehicles were registered, which is a year-on-year growth of 20.6 percent. 2,446,940 traffic permits were extended, which is 4.2 percent more than the previous year. According to data from the Croatian Vehicle Center, 2,497,056 regular technical inspections of vehicles of all categories were carried out last year, and 427,256 of them, or 17 percent, were defective.

On average, a defective vehicle had six faults. Most of them were found on devices that enable normal visibility (22.9 percent) and on devices for rooting (22.3).

The average age of passenger cars was 13.9 years, while the total age of vehicles is 14.6 years, which for the first time after a long time represents the stagnation of the average age of vehicles in Croatia.

Growth in the number of hybrids

A large increase in hybrid powered passenger vehicles is also visible. In 2024, 70,608 hybrid vehicles were registered in Croatia, while in 2023 there were 44,311. The number of registered electric vehicles in 2024 is 9,987, which is also significantly more than in 2023, when there were 7,032.

Tomislav Škreblin, assistant to the administration for technical affairs of the Croatian Vehicle Center, says that the results from 2024 indicate positive developments in the vehicle fleet, but also the continuous need to raise awareness of technical correctness.

“After a long time, we finally experienced a year in which the average age of the vehicle fleet did not increase. We hope that the stagnation of the average age is an indication of a new trend of decreasing the average age of vehicles in Croatia. However, almost six of errors per defective vehicle says that vehicle owners should have as much information as possible about how they can recognize and repair defects in time and thus increase your safety and the safety of other road users,” said Škreblin.

The good maintenance of vehicles, which are still older than the European average, increases safety and their useful life, and reduces fuel consumption and environmental impact, he added.
