Vinegar is the most effective home method to disinfect the toothbrush, according to a Peruvian study

Thousands of bacteria live in our mouths and, consequently, on the brushes we use every day. Despite this, most people do not usually disinfect them after using them. And on the internet there are many tips to clean the brushes. How effective are they?

That is why a local team of scientists has verified the effectiveness of the forms of disinfection most used by Peruvians, using brushes infected by Enterococcus faecalisa commensal bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal tract diseases and is frequently found in humid environments.

The disinfecting agents that have shown the best results are the following: first, a culinary agent (vinegar blanco); then a radiation agent (microwave); and, thirdly, a rinse-type chemical agent (clorhexidina). All of them have shown a high bacteria elimination rate in the tests carried out.

“Although chlorhexidine is the disinfectant par excellence and is highly recommended by dentists, its price (26 soles) is quite high among oral products and its use must be supervised by a doctor. In this research we have found alternatives accessible to the public that have a level of effectiveness similar to that of this product, mainly vinegar and microwave radiation.”explains Julissa Dulanto Vargas, one of the authors of the study and associate researcher at the Scientific University of the South.

The research has been published by the International Journal of Dentistry and was carried out by thesis student Gina Alessandra Donayre, an undergraduate student studying stomatology at Cientifica.

How was the research carried out?

In this in vitro experimental study (in the laboratory) 76 brushes were used new ones of standard size, which were immersed in the bacterial solution of Enterococcus faecalis. The heads were then randomly submerged individually for a period of 2 hour in sterile plastic containers that They contained 3 ml of the different disinfection liquids. These included distilled water, garlic extract, white vinegar, chlorhexidine, and dimethyl sulfoxide.

After the test, the brushes that were disinfected with dimethylsulfoxic and distilled water they continued to have a high level of contamination; while those who were cleansed with garlic extract had a medium level; and those who underwent surgery with chlorhexidine, microwave radiation and white vinegar, presented a low level.

“Even though there are many widespread beliefs about the effectiveness of garlic extract for disinfection, the study found that its results did not surpass the standard of vinegar and chlorhexidine”clarified the author.

What can we do to improve our oral health?

Oral hygiene is a fundamental pillar for health, but it goes beyond simple daily brushing. According to the researcher, this should be done at least twice a day, although ideally it would be done after each main meal to guarantee a more complete cleaning. In addition, the time spent brushing is also crucial: it should last at least two minutes to allow the toothpaste to act effectively.

The brushing method is also key. There are techniques such as sweeping, circular or horizontal movements, and their choice must be adapted to the individual characteristics of each person, such as the condition of the teeth or the presence of dental prostheses. “Therein lies the importance of dental consultations, where we can recommend the most appropriate method according to the age, dentition and even the motor skills of the person”highlights the specialist. Customizing these recommendations ensures that cleaning is efficient and prevents future problems.

Likewise, flossing is not an addition, but an essential part of oral care, especially in adults with permanent teeth. “Without flossing, oral hygiene is incomplete. The remains of food left between the teeth can encourage the growth of bacteria and cause long-term problems,” says the researcher. The combination of good brushing and flossing ensures effective removal of debris and a thorough cleaning.

In addition to basic habits, some people may require additional supplements depending on their susceptibility to specific bacteria or oral conditions. In these cases, products such as specialized mouthwashes may be necessary. However, these solutions must be indicated by a dental professional.
