OpenAI stops depending on Microsoft infrastructure

Microsoft and OpenAI They have adapted the collaboration agreement they began six years ago to adapt it to a phase of the artificial intelligence (AI) market, which no longer forces OpenAI to depend on Microsoft’s infrastructure to train its models.

Microsoft and OpenAI started a collaboration in 2019 launching new computing capabilities in Azure to train large models (LLM) and accelerate the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).

This Azure supercomputer is responsible for the GPT trainingthe OpenAI LLM that powers the ChatGPT chatbot, and the advances made in it have also been transferred to Microsoft services, such as Copilot.

The two companies have updated the agreement, which will be valid until 2030, to adapt it to the new phase of artificial intelligence that is beginning, starting with OpenAI no longer depending exclusively on the Microsoft supercomputer.

“This new agreement includes changes in exclusivity on new capacity, moving to a model in which Microsoft has a right of first refusal (ROFR). To further support OpenAI, Microsoft approved OpenAI’s ability to create additional capacity, primarily for research and model training,” they explain in a press release.

Microsoft maintains the intellectual property rights of OpenAIthat is, the model and infrastructure, to implement them in their own products and also make them available to their clients.

Customers will continue to have access to the most advanced models through the OpenAI APIgiven that “is exclusive to Azureruns on Azure and is also available through the Azure OpenAI service”

Microsoft, furthermore, continues to be a “major investor in OpenAI”, and both companies have agreed on revenue sharing, to ensure that both “benefit from increased use of new and existing models.”

The deal update comes after US President Doland Trump announced a project to create artificial intelligence infrastructure in the country, called ‘Stargate’, which will be in the hands of the ‘joint venture’ formed by OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle.
