Exodus from Tiktok to Rednotte, and everyone studies Chinese on Duolingo

Duolingo, the popular linguistic learning platform, reported a 216% increase in US users who learn the Chinese Mandarin following the migration from Tiktok to Xiaohonghu. This significant increase coincides with the passage of many users from Tiktok, following the growing concerns about the possible ban of the app in the United States, in Xiaohonghu (Rednotte), a Chinese social media app and online shopping. Xiaohongshu, also known as Little Red Book or Rednotte, is a Chinese social e-commerce platform that combines content generated by users with online shopping. Lanted in 2013, initially as a platform for sharing advice for shopping abroad, it has evolved in a reference point for lifestyle inspiration, product reviews and direct e-commerce. Xiaohongshu is often defined as a combination of Pinterest, Instagram and Amazon.

Similar to Instagram for the visual aspect, it works as an e-commerce portal where users can browse and buy products directly on the platform. Its users’ base is mainly composed of young women aged between 18 and 35, residing in urban areas and with a good level of income, interested in advice on beauty, fashion and lifestyle. As Tiktok’s possible getting closer to the possible imprisonment, many American users poured out on Xiaohonghu, considered a valid alternative and a gesture of protest against the ban. The United States Supreme Court should pronounce on a law that requires Tiktok to separate from its Chinese mother -in -law, Bytedance, by January 19, under penalty of ban in the United States for national security reasons.

Xiaohonghu has climbed the rankings of the US App Store, becoming the most downloaded social networking app. The hashtag #tiktokrefugee has gone viral on Xiaohonghu, with over 160,000 posts of American users who present themselves and ask for advice on how to use the app, they call “rednotes”. The downloads of the app increased by over 200% on an annual basis this week. Over 700,000 new users have enrolled in Xiaohonghu, and some Chinese users recorded tutorial in English or welcome video for American users.
