They find in Egypt the ancient real tomb of Tutmosis II, ancestor of Tutankhamun

Tutmosis II was a pharaoh of the XVIII dynasty, who lived about 3,500 years ago. He was ancestor of Tutankhamun and married his stepsister Hatshepsut.

His burial was found near the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, in southern Egypt, a few kilometers from his imposing funeral temple, erected on the west shore of the Nile.

This is “one of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent years,” the Antiques Ministry celebrated Tuesday.

According to preliminary studies, the tomb, excavated by an Egyptian-British joint mission, was emptied in ancient times, leaving the burial without real mummy or the golden splendor associated with the finding of Tutankhamun.

The entrance was first located in 2022 in the mountains of Luxor, west of the Valley of the Kings, but experts thought it led to the tomb of a real wife.

The team later found “Fragments of Alabaster vessels with the name of the pharaoh Tutmosis II, identified as the ‘deceased king’, as well as inscriptions with the name of his main real wife, Queen Hatshepsut,” says the Ministry.

Shortly after the king’s inhumation, the water flooded the funeral chamber, damaging the interior and fragmenting a plaster coating decorated with extracts of the Amduat’s book, an ancient funeral text over the beyond.

There were also some funeral furniture that belonged to Tutmosis II, the Ministry said.

According to the head of the mission, Piers Litherland, cited by the Ministry, the team was going to continue its work in the region, hoping to find objects that originally contained the grave.

This announcement occurs at a time when Egypt intensifies its efforts to boost tourism, an essential source of foreign currencies for the country’s economy.

Last year, Egypt hosted 15.7 million tourists and this year awaits the visit of 18 million, especially thanks to the expected inauguration of the great Egyptian museum, at the foot of the Pyramids of Guiza.
