Amazon presents its first quantum computing chip to compete with its rivals

Amazon Web Services (AWS), American cloud service provider AmazonOcelot launch announced on Thursday, its first generation quantum chip, in an attempt to take advantage of this experimental computer technology in competition against other technological giants.

The new semiconductor was developed by the AWS center for quantum computing of the Institute of State of California and can reduce the implementation costs of the quantum errors concealer up to 90%, according to the company.

“We believe that if we are going to manufacture quantum practical computers, the correction of quantum errors should be the first. That is what we have done with Ocelot, ”said Oskar Painter, AWS quantum hardware director.

Unlike conventional computers, which use bits that represent values of 1 or 0 in series, in this case they use quantum bits – “Qubits” -, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously, which potentially solves complex problems exponentially faster than conventional computers.

Research in quantum computer science is considered an expanding critical area and thus great powers such as the United States and China have been strongly investing in it. In the case of the first, the Government has imposed export restrictions on this sensitive technology to avoid potential threats.

Last week, the rival Microsoft presented its own quantum chip that, as indicated, could generate great transformations in society, from the fight against pollution to the development of new medications.

Last December, another of the technological giants, in this case Google, presented its own quantum chip, the Willow. The Californian group argued that this new element drastically reduced calculation errors and had made a complex calculation that would have taken millions of years to a traditional supercomputer.

One of the greatest challenges of this item is the sensitivity of the “qubits” to environmental disturbances, such as heat and electromagnetic interferences, which can generate calculation errors.

According to AWS, Ocelot avoids the problem with its innovative design that could reduce the necessary resources to correct errors between five and ten times more than conventional methods.
