The Pacific Obsters invaded the Baltic Sea

The Pacific Ocean is abused by life in less salty waters and breeding off Skåe seeds, although it is less than 10 years there. The Pacific Ocean was imported to farms in Europe in the 1970s to replace the collapse of the collapsed oyster population. Scientists believe that low salinity acts as a barrier to prevent oysters deep into the Baltic Sea, but the new study shows that oysters can adapt quickly and distribute in brackish water. “We now know that oysters in the Oresund Strait can reproduce there and their larvae are taken to the Baltic Sea through the sea flow, but we do not know whether they can adapt to life there,” Hai Duong Biologist Pierre de Wit, biologist Hai Duong at Gothenburg University, said.

Authorities tried to raise the Pacific Ocean in Sweden in the 1970s, but they could not reproduce, perhaps due to the cold water. Pacific oysters need water temperature above 20 degrees to mature sex. It was not until the 2000s that this condition was popular in Sweden. Currently, oysters reproduce every summer in Sweden. A female oyster can release hundreds of millions of eggs, and their larvae drift along the stream for 2-3 weeks, allowing them to spread very quickly. The group of authors studying the male and female oysters in the waters of different salinity, from the Baltic Sea (salinity of 8 per thousand) to the usual salinity (33 parts).

Oysters collected from the waters on Hallands Väderö Island in Skåe seeds can reproduce well with salinity of 13 parts, while oysters from Bohusl are not able to withstand salinity lower than 18 parts. Research shows that the fertility of oysters depends on the combination of the environment and genetic. At the lowest salinity, genetic is the most important factor. “We do not know how low the Pacific Oyster can reproduce at the future. But many of their gene -shaped evidence allows them to suffer more brackish water today,” said Alexandra Kinnby, biologist in Hai Duong at Gothenburg University, the main author of the study, said.

Pacific oysters fertilized outside, eggs and sperm were released by adult individuals into water. Sperm must then find eggs and fertilized offshore. But sperm is very sensitive to factors such as temperature and salinity. In the new study, scientists pointed out the genetic diversity of sperm in some key genes that decide whether oysters can reproduce with low salinity.
