In Barcelona, ​​biological computer, remote driving and humanoid robots

The Mobile World Congress (MWC), which is celebrated this week in Barcelona, ​​is the scenario where technological innovations are exhibited in the field of telecommunications and computer science. This year, one of the most disruptive advances is the presentation of the CL1, the first biological computer, developed by the Australian company Cortical Labs. In addition, there are other novelties, such as the device for the remote driving of vehicles and the Humanoid Robot Unitree G.

Developed by the Australian Cortical Labs company, CL1 is a computer that combines cultivated neurons with a silicon chip, which sends and receives electrical impulses. This advance is the result of progress in Nanobiotechnology that have allowed the manipulation of biological structures for information processing and storage.

The CL1 operating system, called BIOS (Biological Intelligence Operating System), sends information directly to neurons about their environment through electrical impulses, allowing them to process information in a similar way to how the human brain does.

Neurons in CL1 are programmable, it is possible to display code on them, opening the door to new studies and applications in artificial intelligence and neuroscience.

While it is not designed for domestic use or seeks to compete with traditional computers, CL1 could revolutionize research about neurodegenerative diseases.

In addition, its low energy consumption makes it a more sustainable alternative for certain types of calculation, consolidating its position as a key tool in the exploration of new borders in the world of lacomputation.

Another of the most shocking demonstrations in the MWC is a device for remote driving vehicles, a project developed by the company Estonia Elmo Remote in collaboration with the Finnish Nokia and the GSMA.

Thanks to an advanced connectivity infrastructure and the use of network application programming interfaces, people can handle a car located in Finland, more than 3,400 kilometers away.

Henry Calvert, head of GSMA networks, stressed that the system allows you to control a vehicle through a steering wheel, an accelerator and screens connected by means of a high speed network.

This technology, which has already been approved in several European and American countries, could be applied in the future to vehicle rental services or to improve road safety.

In the field of robotics, Unitree G1 has captured the interest of MWC attendees. It is a humanoid robot, developed by the Chinese company Unitree Robotics, which measures 1.27 meters, weighs 40 kilos and has 23 engines distributed by its limbs.

This device with child appearance, has a 3D lidar sensor and a depth chamber that allows you to interpret your environment and move autonomously.

Available in Spain for approximately 25 thousand euros since November 2024, the Unitree G1 has multiple applications. Ethan Garcia-Norro, Unitree Spain robot operator, explained that it can be used for private security, medical care and even rescue.

UNITREE G1 is able to detect a person’s symptomatology or perform rescue in dangerous environmentssaid.

The MWC 2025 had the participation of more than 2,700 exhibitors from multiple countries and the presence of 1,200 speakers, of which 40 percent are women.
