Mickey7, on Audible the audiobook that inspired the film with Robert Pattinson

The “Mickey7” science fiction novel by Edward Ashton, recently published in Audible audiobook format and starring Stefano Crescentini (voice actor of Robert Pattinson in Mickey 17, the new Bong Joon-Io film based on the novel) raises deep questions about the identity, consciousness and nature of the human being. The narrative, which anticipates the exit of the Mickey 17 film adaptation, transcends the mere science fiction adventure to go into a territory of philosophical and ethical reflection. The central premise of the work – the possibility of replicating an individual through cloning, transferring the memories of the predecessor to the new body – triggers a series of crucial questions. If a human being could be regenerated infinite times, keeping his memory intact, would he retain his original identity? The essence of an individual lies solely in the continuum of his memories and experiences, or is it intrinsically linked to its specific biological configuration, to its single and unrepeatable body?

The story of Mickey Barnes, a “sacrificable” employed in the colonization of the hostile Niflheim planet, offers a privileged perspective on these issues. Mickey, destined to die and repeatedly reborn to carry on the mission, confronts his mortality and, above all, with the duplication of himself in the encounter with Mickey8. This triggering event questioned not only its individual identity, but also the very legitimacy of the replication process and its impact on the colonial mission. The audiobook, through Crescentini’s voice, explores the psychological and philosophical implications of this existential condition. The narrative, as the voice actor himself points out, focuses on the subtle differentiation between the two clones, while maintaining an empathic link with both. The survival of the human colony on Niflheim, threatened by the extreme environmental conditions and by the growing curiosity of indigenous creatures, therefore becomes secondary compared to the survival of Mickey’s identity, put to the test by its own replicability.
