Today the International Mathematics Day with various activities is celebrated

With more than 600 events around the world, students, fans and experts will celebrate today the International Mathematics Day (DIM) 2025, also known as Pi daywhose motto this year is Mathematics, Arts and Creativity. In Mexico, more than 30 activities will be carried out in different states, including conferences, workshops and recreational events for all ages.

This edition coincides with a visible lunar eclipse in the western hemisphere, which gives rise to discussing how mathematics allows predicting and understanding these astronomical phenomena.

Mathematics and art have contributed to the development of humanity. Our creativity is challenged today by our own creations, and we have to invest more in these matters to keep human creativity alivesaid Betül Tanbay, mathematics and president of the DIM.

Virtual and face -to -face acts

The act is organized by the International Mathematical Union (UMI) and includes virtual and face -to -face activities, including celebrations in schools, museums, libraries and other public spaces, in more than 90 countries. The program for South Global Schools sponsored by the Simons Foundation stands out.

Through this program, participating schools receive and use didactic materials for the creation of artistic mosaics, polyhedros construction or activities on eclipses mathematics. In addition, thousands of people can send a photograph with artistic and mathematical content to the 2025 creative challenge, entitled Mathematics that you can play.

Among the virtual conferences, the Mathematics and creativity in art and educationorganized by UNESCO, DIM and UMI. The session talked about art inspired by mathematics and ways to link both disciplines in education.

Forms, rhythms and balances

Mathematics, art and nature share a common language: forms, rhythms and balancesaid Sadeck Berrabah, choreographer known to explore geometry in motion. Through dance, drawing in space as if lines were drawn on a paper, seeking to reveal the hidden harmony that connects the geometry of the body with the world of the worldhe added.

In Mexico, the DIM celebration will include activities in Oaxaca, Veracruz, Puebla, Mexico City, Sinaloa, Sonora, Coahuila, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Among the outstanding events, are:

In Mexico City, the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Iztapalapa Unit, will offer the machine learning talk by building a classifier from scratch, by Alejandro Román, and the triangular box workshop in the Modular Origami technique, with Adriana Caballero.

The UNAM, through the Mathematics Institute, will present the colloquium of Mexican Mathematical Society, with the Conference Random Changes of Time, by María Emilia Caballero. In addition, on Sunday the fourth career of Pi will be held in Ciudad University.

In Morelos, the Juan Soriano Museum of Contemporary Art will offer workshops, challenges, interactive experiments to explore the relationship between mathematics, art, nature and daily life.

In Oaxaca, the Oaxacan celebration of the Pi day will be held, on the esplanade of the Oaxaca Technological Institute, with recreational activities, workshops, conferences, the show of the clowns of science and the traditional contest of Pi digits.

In Veracruz, the Prepa Anáhuac Xalapa will carry out a series of plastic practices with respect to mathematics in art and artificial intelligence. In addition to a rally Mathematician with 15 stages where creativity and mathematics challenges are performed.

In Chihuahua, the Museum of Mathematics, Art and Creativity will exhibit objects designed by students of the Jiménez City Institute, as part of this year’s mathematical challenge.

UNESCO proclaimed on March 14 as International Mathematics Day at the 40th session of its General Conference, on November 26, 2019. This day was chosen because the Pi day was already held in many countries, based on the fact that some nations write it as 3/14 and the constant mathematics PI is approximately 3.14.

According to the organizers, the DIM is the opportunity to explain and celebrate the essential role played by mathematics and mathematical education in the advances in science and technology, improving the quality of life, empowering women and girls and contributing to the achievement of the sustainable development objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
