The physicist group from Princeton University, the jet pushing laboratory of the California Institute of Technology (CIT) and Spectral Sensor Solutions, proposed to generate electricity by energy from the Earth’s rotating motion. In the new study, published in the magazine Physical Review Research On March 19, they tested theory by using a special device that interacted with the magnetic field.
Over the past decade, the team considered the idea of creating electricity with the rotation and magnetic field of the Earth, even published a study describing this possibility in 2016. This study encountered skepticism because previous theories thought that this was impossible: any voltage created by such a device will be eliminated when the electrons arrange itself in the process of generating electric fields.
In the new research, the scientist group wondered what would happen if it stopped this elimination and seized the voltage. To find out, they make special equipment including a cylinder made of ferrite manganist, a weak conductor, acting as a magnetic shield. After that, they direction the cylinder in the North-South direction with an angle of 57 degrees. This makes the device perpendicular to both the rotation and magnetic field of the Earth.
Next, the research team set the electrodes at each end of the cylinder to measure the voltage, then turn off the light to prevent the photovoltaic effect. They discovered 18 electric microvolt generated on the cylinder that could not be attributed to any other source, proving that this amount of electricity appears due to energy from the Earth.
The scientists note that they have taken into account the voltage that can be generated due to the temperature difference between the two ends of the cylinder and does not measure the voltage so when changing the angle or control of the cylinder. However, the results will need to be verified by other experts conducting the same type of experiment in many situations to ensure that no other power source that the group misses. The team of experts also said that if their discovery is accurate, the amount of electricity produced can increase to useful to use in practice.
