Washington justifies this decision by pointing out that the activities of these companies are “contrary to international policy and the national security of the United States.”

The inclusion in this list imposes on US companies obtaining a previous government agreement to be able to export semiconductors to the signatures indicated.

“We will not allow adversaries to exploit US technology to strengthen their own armies and threaten US lives,” said Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in a statement.

The objective of the measure is above all to limit access to US semiconductors by Chinese companies suspected of being linked to the army or the intelligence services of Beijing.

Among the new affected companies, the vast majority are Chinese, with subsidiaries in Taiwan, South Africa or the United Arab Emirates. Two companies, in China and Iran, are in the sights for having tried to obtain US pieces to help in the development of Iranian defense drones programs.

Until now, Washington imposed restrictions on more than 150 Chinese companies, both for semiconductors and for the necessary equipment for its production.
