Vietnam suggested IAEA to share the experience of nuclear power development

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology suggested IAEA to share experiences in the master plan, select a strategic partner for Vietnam’s nuclear power project.

At the meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, the Republic of Austria on March 25, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong and the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Science, Technology and Environment Committee Le Quang Huy made many cooperation proposals in the field of atomic energy.

With the project to restart the nuclear power project, Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong suggested Iaea to share experiences in the master plan, build the roadmap for deployment, develop high quality human resources and select strategic partners.

Mr. Le Quang Huy wants IAEA to support and advise in -depth expertise for the establishment of independent and effective nuclear rules; Develop a process of licensing of nuclear power plants in accordance with international standards; enhance security and nuclear safety; establish regular monitoring and inspection mechanisms; Promulgating regulations related to the liability for nuclear damage.

The representative of IAEA highly appreciated Vietnam’s determination in restoring nuclear programs for peaceful purposes, and committed to continuing to accompany and support both professional and technical support. IAEA will arrange resources to comment for the Draft Law atomic Energy (amended) and coordinate with the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam to prepare detailed content for official work expected to take place in April.

The representative of IAEA also introduced the Nuclear Security Training Center and current training models, ready to send experts to support in Vietnam as well as receive Vietnamese officials to study and research.

Vietnam joined IAEA since 1978. IAEA has aid to Vietnam an average of 6-7 national technical cooperation projects with a total budget of over 1 million USD/cycle of 2 years. In the period of 2018-2023, Vietnam was directly supported by IAEA to support 17 national projects with a total budget approved by nearly 3 million euros.
