Why do Elon Musk’s satellites fall? There is an unexpected threat that is destroying them

Starlink is the company of Elon Musk that directs a satellite Internet service. To date it has around 7 thousand satellites orbiting the Earth, although recently the fall of some of these objects has been seen and an investigation warns a threat.

The satellites are thrown through Spacex rockets, since 2019, and allow the Internet to reach remote areas of the planet. However, there is a latent problem.

It indicates a DW report that a new research published in the review scientific New Scientist, has shown that the sun is destroying these satellites faster than expected.

What is indicated is that every 11 years the sun crosses a period of maximum activity known as Máximo Solar, which reached its most recent point in the late 2024. These are solar rashes that generate geomagnetic storms.

“We found that when we have geomagnetic storms, satellites re -enter faster than expected,” said Denny Oliveira, from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

The problem is that for the first time we have so many satellites orbiting the earth. Since 2020 it has been detected that 523 Starlink satellites have re -entered our atmosphere.

This situation raises two scenarios, they warn. On the one hand, it can benefit operators by stirring dead satellites that could represent a danger of collision. However, it can also limit the ability to operate satellites in very low orbits.
