Google is working on smart glasses again, these might work

Unlike the old Google Glass, which looked weird, had limited features and quickly became a meme, the new model is emerging at a time when the entire industry is pushing AI glasses. Target moreć has Ray Ban smart glasses, Xiaomi, ByteDance and others are making their own models, and Qualcomm is developing special AR chips (Snapdragon AR1/AR1+) that enable part of the AI ​​functions to work directly on the glasses, without a constant connection to a mobile phone.

Google sees an opportunity here: to combine Android XR (an extended version of Android for augmented reality) with its own Gemini AI model and thus offer glasses that can be a personal assistant on your face – recognize objects in front of you, translate signs on the street, show the way, summarize e-mails or messages that arrive on your mobile phone. The idea is something like “Google Assistant in the real world”, but in the form of normal glasses, not a bulky headset.

Whether this attempt will finally succeed will depend on three things: appearance, battery and privacy. People don’t want to look like robots, glasses have to last all day, and filming with a camera in public always raises eyebrows. But unlike in 2013, today već we have Ray Ban Meta glasses and similar devices, so the audience is more used to that idea. If Google really releases a beautiful, light and smart model in 2026, it will be their second, much more serious entry into the world of “glasses of the future”.
