RFI and Sogesid for a sustainable railway infrastructure

Sustainability, innovation and protection of the territory become central pillars in the new collaboration launched between Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), manager of the national railway infrastructure (FS Group), and Sogesid, the environmental engineering company of the central state administrations. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), combines the complementary skills of the two entities with the aim of generating public value through high-impact projects.

The agreement identifies two major lines of action, both aimed at improving and modernizing the Italian railway system.

First director: energy and territorial sustainability

The first area of collaboration does not involve economic exchange and is oriented towards environmental sustainability. Among the most relevant initiatives stands out the project foridentification of public areas of RFI to be allocated to the creation of plants powered by renewable sources.

Specific attention is paid to previously reclaimed areas, including those located in Sites of National Interest (SIN), Sites of Regional Interest (SIR) and landfills undergoing infringement proceedings. By exploiting these areas, RFI aims to optimize the reuse of complex land. At the same time, the MoU provides a program for the progressive decommissioning of the aqueducts managed by RFIthrough the adoption of innovative and sustainable partnership models.

Second direction: acceleration and infrastructural safety

The second direction commits Sogesid to making its technical-specialist skills available to support RFI in the management of the most complex infrastructure interventions. The objective is concentrated on three strategic areas for safety and design quality:

Simplification and acceleration of authorization processes in landscape matters.

Reduction of times in the clearance of war ordnance (BOB) activities.

Development of an advanced system for monitoring hydrogeological instability.

These modern tools are at the service of safety, prevention and speeding up bureaucratic and operational processes.

To ensure full consistency with the legislation and institutional missions, they will be joint working groups have been established which will have the task of defining the priorities, operating methods and conditions for any direct assignments. This approach is based on transparency and shared responsibility.
